1966 was a significant year for golf in the Algarve. Welcome to the Penina Championship course.
Crafted by Sir Henry Cotton, this was the Algarve's first ever championship course. It laid the foundations for the region's rapid ascent to becoming the number one destination for golf enthusiasts in Europe and has been home to the Portugal Open on numerous occasions.

Penina boasts tree lined fairways, strategically positioned bunkers, as well as lakes and streams, making it a challenging course to navigate. With undulating terrain and elevated greens, it encompasses all the features one expects from a championship course.

The location of Penina is appealing with its proximity to Alvor and Portimao, both famous for their wildlife and stunning beaches respectively. Getting there will take around one hour from Faro airport heading towards the Western Algarve. The course lies in 360 acres of parkland estate with a hotel and its many facilities.
Playing the course will challenge you, it was designed to with its many water features, natural streams and ditches. It's an unforgiving course with tight fairways and some lengthy holes. Strategy will be key to your score on this course and if you've successfully managed to navigate the first half reasonable well, the four par 5's on the return might just reclaim some points.
Hole 5 is a particularly challenging one that requires a long and accurate drive. The second shot will determine any potential for points on this hole, you could have a long iron shot to the green but you'll need to carry the pond, or you could cross the stream to a landing area on the right, leaving a short iron pitch.
Pricing at Penina is reasonable for a course of this calibre. In addition, combining golf with accommodation may offer even more favourable rates should you wish to consider this.
