Originally owned by a Portuguese family who first built the course in 1975, Palmares Ocean Living Resort has evolved in the decades since. The area itself and the golf courses are now very significant and form part of a much improved and larger development project.
Mix of Links and Parkland
The golf course offers 27 unique holes divided into 3 distinct sections. While most of the course features classic parkland layouts with some incredible views, there's also a section inspired by links courses, known as "Praia," that provides a different golfing experience.

“Palmares Golf Course offers a beautiful, challenging golfing experience with unique layouts and breathtaking views. The course condition is generally superb, with pristine fairways that allow for smooth play. However, the first cut rough around the fairways could use some extra attention for optimal consistency.
The greens are exceptionally fast, presenting a fair yet demanding test for golfers of all skill levels. I played the Praia 9, a scenic stretch by the coast with links-style holes and ample sand, lending a true seaside challenge with four coastal holes. We also tackled the Alvor 9, where four of the holes offer some of the most stunning vistas you’ll find on any course—an absolute highlight of the round.
Overall, I’d rate Palmares a solid 4 out of 5 stars, with only minor adjustments needed to make this an even better experience. Highly recommended for those looking to combine great golf with spectacular views!
Palmares Ocean Living Golf
The course lies West of the Alvor Estuary in Lagos near Portimao and covers an area of almost 200 hectares. Getting there is easy with both the National 125 and A22 motorway ensuring easy access. Alvor is a popular resort and lies within an area of importance, being a National Park. Portimao, also very close to the venue is another prominent holiday destination.
When playing the course you can expect a number of challenges, terrain and obstacles, as there are three individual sets of 9 holes. These are playable in various forms over three separate scorecards. You can experience undulating fairways lined with pine trees, open and expansive holes with little to no vegetation, holes with dunes and holes running parallel to the railway tracks.
The course is difficult and designed to offer a demanding golfing experience. While it's open to all skill levels, it might be more enjoyable for players with some experience or who are looking for a challenge.
Pricing for the Palmares collection is geared towards the higher end but consistent with the courses around Vilamoura, however there are some discounts available for off peak times.
